Teaching English remotely in Finland

Six years ago, I moved to the Nordics and never looked back.

I started working in a primary school just outside of a city called Vaasa. It was a typical teaching job with some added focus on English language. It was my first professional job in the education sector, but very quickly I realised that there were many aspects of being a school teacher that restricted the creativity I wanted to add to my teaching methods.

Oh yes, I hear you – “Isn’t Finland supposed to have one of the best education systems in the world?” It does, but it still doesn’t allow for teachers to individualise their methods to each student, and that’s something I really believe in.

I set up my online teaching business back in 2018 and suddenly had control over the way I teach and all the resources available to make it happen. I focused on advanced conversational English and helping people to improve their speaking skills by using their lives as the learning material. If a student wants to learn English by analysing a football match, then that’s what we do. If they want to prepare for a work presentation in the lesson, that’s also fine. It’s the most natural approach to learning English and it’s fun to teach this way too.

I live on the countryside in a 100 year old red, wooden house, surrounded by the Finnish forests and I can safely say that i’ll never work in an office again.
I’m speaking to people from every corner of the world, building friendships and I’m teaching exactly how I want to teach. With this level of authenticity and passion behind it, I’m able to give my students everything. I’m motivated, they’re motivated and together we engage in some really inspirational conversations. They even teach me a thing or too!

If you ever get the chance to visit this beautiful country, don’t hesitate. If you’re someone who loves nature, peace and quiet, and purity in your life, this is the place for you.
